Point Roberts Historical Society - Seabright Farm Cottages

Point Roberts Historical Society

As we’ve written about before, Point Roberts is chock full of history. From its discovery by Spanish explorers in the 18th century, to the first Icelandic settlers and the heyday of the fishing and canning industry, all the way up to present day, the Point is full of stories. But without a dedicated museum, Point Roberts’ residents took it upon themselves to preserve this history by forming the Point Roberts Historical Society.

First informally formed in 1981 by a small group of residents, the Point Roberts Historical Society has grown into one of (if not the) biggest organizations in the Point. A registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the society is responsible for the collection and safekeeping of artifacts or records of Point Roberts’ history. The group is very active in the community by hosting tours, guest talks, lunches, exhibits and even marching in the annual 4th of July parade. They’ve even made booklets, clothing and posters for sale to help eventually fund a permanent museum! Although a museum would be a great addition to our community, the Historical Society is dedicated to gathering and preserving local history first and foremost.

The work of the Historical Society can also be seen all around Point Roberts. Whatcom County Parks has worked alongside the society to create signage around Lily Point Marine Park, highlighting the history of canneries in Point Roberts. A number of self-guided walking tours have been set up throughout the Point, and the Community Centre features a number of displays organized by Historical Society members.

You can follow the society on Facebook, where they often share historical photos and stories about the community. And if you’re interested in learning more, the Historical Society meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Community Centre.
